Waunakee Lawn and Landscape recently cleared a logging trail and prepped an area that was heavy with undergrowth and rocks of various sizes. Tilling was nearly impossible due to the rocks, and I did not have access to any larger equipment to turn the soil and remove the rocks. I discussed this with Jim and his crew and I am very happy that it did. Jim cleared up an old logging trail removing numerous small saplings and thorn bushes and then worked the upper 3-4 inches of the soil on the trail and an area I designated for food plot. The trail turned out so good that I decided to seed that area as well. Jim had previously taken a soil sample so as soon as he finished prepping the soil he applied lime and fertilizer for a clover and chicory blend.
The equipment Jim used was awesome and quick. Especially the power rake on his Ventrac. What was amazing to me is that this power rake not only removed all of the organic matter, but it lifted and pushed aside all of the embedded stones. This would have been almost an impossible task with a tiller as I am certain I would have broken many tiller tines in the process. Unknown to me at the time was by only prepping the top 3-4 inches of the soil it did not dig up all of the weed seed that typically lies dormant until disturbed with a traditional tilling method that goes much deeper.
In about 4 hours Jim and his crew cleared the trail, prepped the soil, removed a bunch of stones, applied lime and fertilizer, broadcaster my choice of mixture of clover and chicory, and cultipacked the soil. I couldn’t be happier with the results! Jim even offered to mow the plot. The deer love a freshly mowed clover plot…
